“An Artist at Large” was on display at the State Department from November 24 to December 31, 2008. The United States Diplomacy Center, Bureau of Public Affairs in partnership with Gold Leaf Studios, is pleased to bring fourteen drawings by artist Irena Baruch Wiley to the Department of State Exhibit Hall. Irena was the wife of career Foreign Service Officer and four times Ambassador John C. Wiley. Wherever life took her, Irena completed exquisite portraits of people around her. She captured a wide range of expressions from an Iranian tribal chief to mothers and children burdened by the cares of life. This exhibition illustrates the way Irena used her talents to complement her husband’s diplomatic work and reminds us that everyone undertaking diplomacy, both formally and informally, has gifts to offer.
