On Tuesday December 10, 2019, NMAD hosted PYXERA Global’s one-day workshop entitled “Purpose, Prosperity, People: Mobilizing Citizen Diplomats to Address Global Challenges.” The workshop explored how diplomacy, corporate talent development, cross-sector partnerships, and alignment of business and social goals can move the needle on solving global challenges. The day’s conversations focused on the four primary topics: workforce development, healthcare, human rights, and the environment. Over 50 leaders from across the public, private, and social sectors attended the workshop and served as subject matter experts on various panels and ‘flash-chats.’
Opening keynote speaker and Assistant Secretary for Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) Marie Royce offered participants an overview of how the State Department supports citizen diplomacy and interacts with private partners to create and amplify public-private partnerships. Assistant Secretary for Global Public Affairs Michelle Giuda offered closing keynote remarks in which she highlighted NMAD’s preview exhibit Diplomacy Is Our Mission, a part of which tells the story of the Los Angeles County fire department’s assistance in post-earthquake Nepal, and the role that American citizen diplomats play in international disaster relief.
