For the Public

The National Museum of American Diplomacy (NMAD) will close for in-person visits effective December 16, 2024. Throughout 2025, we will deinstall the temporary “Diplomacy is Our Mission” exhibit, and prepare for the construction and installation of new, permanent exhibitions. The museum will re-open in early 2026.

NMAD will accept a limited number of requests for virtual education programs. If interested, please complete this form.

NMAD staff may be available to present off-site programs within the immediate Washington, DC area. If interested, please complete this form.

Before you fill out a visit request, please note the following:

  • Groups must be 12-40 people total
  • Groups must be high school or university students
  • Requests must be made at least four weeks in advance
  • Visits must be on a Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday
  • Programs are free

For State Department Employees

State Department employees can access the museum without an appointment through the 21st Street entrance of the Harry S Truman building. The museum’s exhibition areas will be closed and not accessible to staff or the public starting on December 16, 2024. The 21st Street entrance will remain open throughout construction.

Visiting the Space

Location

The National Museum of American Diplomacy is located at the 21st Street Entrance of the Harry S Truman building at 330 21st Street NW, Washington, DC 20006. Note: If you are not a State Department employee, you must have an appointment to visit the space.

Arrival Instructions

NMAD is located at 330 21st St NW, Washington, DC 20006, in the Harry S Truman Building. Visitors must enter at the 21st Street entrance to the U.S. Department of State (the glass building on 21st Street between D Street and C Street, NW).

Please arrive on time to allow for ample time for check-in and security processing.

All visitors must provide a government-issued photo ID, such as a U.S. driver’s license or a passport. Individuals under the age of 16 are not required to present a photo ID.

Visitors are required to walk through metal detectors and to put any bags through a separate metal detector conveyor belt. Bags and laptops are allowed in the space, but will slow down the check-in process. To expedite security checks, please avoid bringing any large backpacks or bags when possible.

A NMAD staff member will meet you at the security screening area on 21st Street NW. If you are delayed or arriving early, please email nmad@state.gov.

Video cameras and flash photography are permitted in the museum.
