Unpacking the Tools of Diplomacy

Download Activity

At its core, diplomacy is about communication, compromise, and finding solutions everyone can agree on. And on a global scale, it’s what keeps countries talking instead of fighting. But how? What are the tools diplomats use to de-escalate tensions and build relationships?

Diplomats use tools such as cultural exchange, economic incentives, and bilateral cooperation to de-escalate tensions and build relationships. In this activity, students will analyze the tools of diplomacy in order to examine the incentives and disincentives of tactics used by diplomats to achieve their goals.
