2010 World Cup Vuvuzela
South Africa 2010
A vuvuzela is a type of horn popular at sporting events in South Africa. During the 2010 World Cup for Football/Soccer, which was held in South Africa, the U.S. Embassy in Pretoria distributed vuvuzelas like this one with the goal of raising awareness of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the country and helping stop its spread. The horns included the message: “HIV: Get Tested - Be Responsible.” Funding for this outreach effort came from the United States President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, or PEPFAR. Started in 2003, PEPFAR has invested over $100 billion dollars in the global response, saving over 25 million lives and preventing millions of HIV infections.
